Operational update #5 - Disturbance at Christmas Island Detention Centre
Current as at 0900 AEST 10 November 2015
The Department can confirm an operation is underway this morning to restore order to the Christmas Island Immigration Detention Facility.
The centre perimeter remains secure and additional resources arrived during the night to relieve Departmental and service provider staff.
Service provider staff are continuing to negotiate with detainees engaged in protest activity and are methodically re-entering and securing control of compounds within the centre.
Overnight some detainees not actively participating in the disturbance were moved to a secure part of the facility. However, a group of detainees are continuing to engage in non-compliant behaviour putting themselves and others at risk.
Some additional damage has been caused to facilities overnight, including attempts to light fires. The fire suppression system at the centre remains operational.
Family and Friends who have concerns about the wellbeing of detainees within the facility are advised to call 1800 558 414.
Those in contact with detainees on Christmas Island are encouraged to inform them to return to their rooms if safe to do so, and to follow the directions of service provider staff.
The Department and its service providers remain committed to resolving the situation peacefully and quickly, but will take action to protect people and facilities where an imminent threat exists.
